Argentina may start mining Bitcoin, according to leader in the presidential race.
Sergio Massa, current Minister of Economy and leader of the presidential race, recently spoke with computer scientist Santiago Siri. At the time, Massa and Siri discussed the possibility of the government starting to mine bitcoin.
Siri highlights that Argentina could become a pro-Bitcoin country. Additionally, the government could use Vaca Muerta's surplus energy resources to mine bitcoin.
“We talked about bitcoin and cryptocurrencies with Santiago Siri, an Argentinian world reference on this topic with many ideas to contribute.”
Next, Siri highlighted that bitcoin is like a new gold of the 21st century, and that the Argentine government could use the cryptocurrency as a reserve asset:
“We had a positive meeting with the minister to study how Argentina could become a pro-Bitcoin Republic, where we can use, for example, Vaca Muerta gas to mine.
Bitcoin is like digital gold. We know that there are 21 million units and we cannot generate more. It is a very useful treasury asset and a long-term store of value, and Argentina could add it to the state's public accounts in a sovereign way.”
