This is a thread for random discussions that gets posted everyday at 5am central.
Tell us what you're doing today, ask questions, or vent about your life. Whatever you want, let it rip!
Where does the sats from ads, replies and posts go? Do they all get redistributed, if not, what %, and what are the rough criteria?
reply
All, 100%. The rough criteria to receive them? Consistently posting good content/posts/comments as judged by other trusted users. We use a Web of Trust algo to determine user trust.
reply
Who is "trusted" for initially seeding the algorithm?
reply
Me.
Eventually, I suspect users will be their own seed and see their own feed based on who they trust.
reply
Probably pick like the top 5 stackers of the day, seed based off that?
reply
It's trickier than that. How do we determine the top 5 stackers without establishing trust first? We'd have to "trust" that they're the top 5, but we can't.
Everyone trusts themselves, they are a singularity of trust to themselves, so that seems like a more natural seed.
reply
I was talking about distribution.
reply
I see. Currently we redistribute even to users who contribute non-top content even days ago, just less.
I'm working at a coffee shop today and 6g pops up on my laptop haha wtf is this where did the 5g go and when did we roll out thie 6g omg im dying haha
reply
I heard from a "reliable" source covid was really 5g. 6g is monkeypox.
reply
Going to hopefully push some of the little fixes I have locally today. Then going to go back to work on trust algo.
Ideally I can come up with some kind of model for how much a user trusts another user's upvotes given what they've each upvoted in the past.
reply
Just as a small reference: I have to say today's list includes a lot of great content :) So you are doing something right already...
reply
Are you structuring it such that users with stronger connection have more weight in their votes or the opposite
reply
Users who have more in common with their votes, trust each others votes more.
But I need someway to determine this relationship with a potentially small sample size
reply
I suspect I'll need to use some kind of binomial proportion confidence interval.
reply
I read The Mandibles and i didn't like it much. AMA 😀

The summary I read made it sound like Idiocracy but for people who read.

It plays out all the worries that Bitcoiners have about the future with great detail. Like surprisingly all of the worries.

Listened to this nice Investor's Podcast Network episode with famous investor Bill Miller- states majority of his wealth is concentrated in Amazon and Bitcoin:

Interesting KYC-free P2P marketplace for products and services, similar to OpenBazaar: https://particlmarketplace.shop Uses the PART altcoin, but you can exchange it to Bitcoin here: https://wizardswap.io or cash in person/cash by mail: https://localparticl.com More info: https://particl.io Also there is a continuation of OpenBazaar: https://mobazha.info/
reply
I miss OpenBazaar, why did they kill the project? We need a bitcoin only OpenBazaar
reply
LOL, they burned 10m USD from Andreessen and some other VCs and stopped supporting it when the VC money ran out. Probably for the best.. https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/07/15/openbazaar-co-founder-explains-why-web-3s-answer-to-ebay-folded-its-tents/
reply
Please no Shitcoin Shilling.
reply
You can exchange PART to Bitcoin at any time with WizardSwap (KYC-free), so you don't need to hold it. There are no active decentralized marketplaces yet for Bitcoin (sadly Mobazha.info has few sellers) so Particl could be useful.
If you want to use Bitcoin only, there is an active Telegram marketplace for products/services: https://t.me/BitcoinP2PMarketplace and some new centralized marketplaces: https://tukan.market and https://miragesale.com

Yesterday, Monday, May 23rd, 2022, SN topped its previous all-time high for daily uniques: 1,154.
The previous high was at 1,069 daily unique visitors, which occurred on Wednesday, April 13th. So this ATH beat the previous ATH by 8%.
Also, last week there was a streak of five days in a row with daily uniques above 1,000 -- from Sunday through Thursday.

Rapidly growing number of users is good.
But is content on site growing too? Is there a way to measure that?
And if users/content are not growing in tandem it might be worth trying out a first separate sub imo. I know Keyan wanted to wait at least a year - but maybe that's actually a bottleneck.
reply
Yeah, number of items, which historically at least grows pretty consistently with visitors: ~20-30%/mo.
