I wonder what this means for bitcoin long term. Here's a couple of opposing statements:
  1. The massive size of the exchanges indicates adoption. :)
  2. Massive central exchanges aren't good for bitcoin. :(
Do centralized exchanges belong among the largest corporations in the world?
I think you will have the big majority of the population using bitcoin in centralized entities as exchanges and banks. Some people feel safer that way.
The difference with bitcoin is that people, countries and institutions who want to opt out have the choice.
Also, with bitcoin the governments cant debase the currency, and they cant bailout banks or institutions that abuse of their fractional reserves.
