It's Saturday, which means it is the new poll day. Now that Sundays will become Perth Heat recap days as we follow the Bitcoin baseball team's season for the next few months.
Today's topic is tanking. I was talking sports with a friend of mine and we were discussing the Joe Burrow injury and he said "they should just tank". It had me thinking about how commonplace the idea of tanking has become in sports and how now fans cheer for their teams to tank when they used to dread rebuilds. This has to be a concern for the leagues and have a lot to do with all the leagues trying to push for parity. Not sure what they can do about it, besides completely changing the draft process but then you risk some teams being permanent also rans.
What's your opinion on tanking?
Great- allows crap teams to turn around0.0%
Ok- part of sports now42.9%
Terrible- losing is for losers57.1%

Players don't tank. They want to put up tape and get a job elsewhere if they're not going to be a part of the organisations future. They gotta look after themselves first. NFL stands for Not For Long.
reply
This is true. But in the NFL, teams shut down players when they want to tank.
reply
There are different versions of tanking.
Once a team has been eliminated, I don't mind if they shut down their stars. Those are major financial assets and the hope is that they'll help you compete in the post season. It's also important to find out what your young guys can do, so that you know where to focus in the off-season.
What really bothers me is when teams enter the season with an eye towards being terrible; a la Trust the Process in Philly. You end up doing your fans, players, and coaches an enormous disservice.
reply
See sports has become more about protecting the assets then just going out there and playing.
reply
I would prefer if everyone keeps competing, but I guess I have internalized the asset protection model and come to accept it.
These guys are competing for titles, so once they're out of contention, they move on towards competing for the next one.
If there were a way to get them to go all out for each game, I'd be all for it.

Fiat money ruined the love for the game. In the early days of sports people played because they loved it. Would work odd jobs in the off season so they can play now you have guys so deep down the nba bench making $10M a year. Or meh QBs making $40M a year. The idea that Daniel Jones is going to make more than Steve Young or Dan Marino is sickening.
reply
Daniel Jones might also put up better stats than some of Marino and Young's seasons.
I don't know what to make of some of the money today, because it doesn't seem like sports is as central culturally as it used to be. Is the money from global reach? If it's due to fiat, why are they benefitting so much from Cantillon Effects?
reply
In a pass happy 7 on 7 NFL sure he Better have better stats. But even with the relaxed rules Daniel Jones is still meh. The game is so soft now.

On another note I watched that Thunder v.s Warriors game last night (most of it) and I have moved on from my TWolves fascination to a Thunder fascination. SGA + Chet, I don't know what you do with that.
reply
I think League Pass needs to figure out that neither me nor my VPN proxy are in San Francisco, because I want to be able to watch Warriors games.
I haven't watched OKC play much this season, but they were one of the teams I was interested in coming into the season. Advanced metrics have been painting SGA as one of the best players in the league for a couple of seasons now.
reply
He was unbelievable last night. Canada can make some noise at the Olympics if all their guys play. SGA, Murray, Barrett, Brooks, Wiggins, Dort, Olynyk, Boucher, Banton, Joseph, Mathurin, Clarke, Brissett, Dwight Powell. Come on now.
reply
What happened? Canada invented basketball and then just forgot about it for a hundred years?
reply
Something like that. Did you see the odds on the Bears right now. I couldn't help myself and put 500 sats on them even though I already bet the Lions.
reply
I think the 24 hour sports news cycle and sport pundits ruined the regular season. When I was little everything didn’t live or die with winning a championship. Division and conference titles meant something now it is all moot. So fans are so laser focused on winning it all and just not enjoying the sport in the moment.
reply
There also used to be more franchises that consistently put out good teams that weren't contenders at all. They were trying to give their fans a good reliable experience.
One of the related things that frustrates me during my team's rebuilds (and as a Raider fan, I've seen many), is getting rid of fan favorite players who "don't fit the timeline". I think the big issue is that teams have lost site of the fact that they are an entertainment industry and fans want more than just titles from their teams.

ooops forgot to add the number for the day. For posterity, it is day 137.

lol, wanted to mention this when I saw your post but I thought you're currently looking it up and will edit your post then
reply
I noticed it after the edit period had ended. Poor reviewing on my part. I was supposed to check what number the last post was but got distracted for a few minutes and when I came back I just started writing the post. For shame.
