I'm curious about why people join social networks, some might do for pleasure, some for work and some just want to troll (the best people around 😉).
I personally joined to find like minded people interested in what I like myself, where I'm from there's no much people to talk about those topics.
For example, if I where to talk about tech and stuff with someone I know here, most of them will give me a confused expression and, by the end of the day, I'll probably end up fixing their printer and that's it.
What was it for you instead? I'd like to know your experiences.
I could use someone to fix my printer.

It's funny, at my last company the CEO would come in to work on Saturdays, and his right hand man would come in so he could print stuff out for him. No joke. And the CEO was a brilliant dude, just didn't have mental capacity to devote to giving a shit about untangling the weird printing issues that would invariably arise.
reply
My response was a joke. In reality, I somehow got designated printer repair man in my family back in the day, even though my wife was a computer programmer for a major corporation. My daughter always needed something printed for school when she was growing up. I did not enjoy the task.
reply
You still have a printer?
reply
I have a laser one.
I regret not having a scanner though.
reply
I get by with the phone apps for most scanning. Since I switched to graphene, I use the Open Note Scanner app. It works pretty well.
reply
I tried too but the quality drop too much with my phone, luckily most documents are fine as simple photos for me.
reply
I do. In my line of work documents still need to be signed and scanned a lot. Docusign type technology has made inroads, but it's still not the norm. Most courts still require scanned signed docs. Some even require originals.

Ok, grandpa

I think you're supposed to say "OK, boomer."

That's so last year

Say that in two months 🌝

You don't know what calendar I use.
to share and learn more

I joined for the same reason as you, I grew up in an environment where I looked like the odd one out cos I talked about what most people didn't understand and this made me stay indoors on my own, and online is the only where I get to interact with people that have the same goal as me and dim very fortunate to have met some of them irl.
reply
That's really nice, I do have a similar situation, apart from trips and lonely walks (I love taking walks alone), I'm at home most of the time.
reply
I find myself losing interest in online social networks because none of them seem to have any focus other than engagement-farming. I don't find them particularly good anymore for coming together with people who share my interests. I think it's something that could be rediscovered online.
reply
I too have noticed this, at first some accounts becomes almost like some weird no-profit ads.
Engagement is good usually, but only if it has meaning.
reply
Mostly for networking and meeting new people

Sometimes we look for people with whom to talk about different topics. For example: Bitcoin, aliens, if the earth is flat, what is there in Antarctica. I enter other topics that your close friends they do not try
reply
So true, being online without a face can help unleash your thoughts and share things that you would otherwise keep to yourself, maybe out of lack of interest or fear of being seen different by others.
Also in Antarctica there's probably ice everywhere.
reply
If you are very right, one takes courage for not being face to face.
Regarding Antarctica, if there is only ice, I believe that 53 countries signed an agreement just to protect ice. Or they want to hide something 👀
reply
That's probably where they keep their seeds.
A literal cold storage. 🧊
reply
For me there is a lot of mystery but I appreciate your more objective answer and it makes sense
reply
Who knows, your your eyes can tell the truth.
Also, my half joke made me remember this video I saw long ago:

Anything can happen. There is a saying that says suspect and you will be right
I'll watch the video 🤠

I started using alternative social media basically as an act of anti-Big Tech activism. I really never enjoyed social media or used it much (except for reddit). When all the major platforms became openly partisan censorship outlets, I wanted to help their alternatives succeed.
Stacker News is the only platform I would use purely for my own enjoyment. I still hop on nostr and Minds in my effort to help Big Tech alternatives succeed, but they pail in comparison to SN for engagement quality.
reply
I'm also on Nostr and like it a lot, most for the technical side than the social, but still quite fun.
I also tried text before learning about Nostr and was fine for a while, after that I had people mentioning me in discussions I didn't care at all. Not my soup.
reply
Sorry rereading it I misspelled the word. 😔
"text" is "twtxt"
reply
I haven't heard of either one. Looks like I'm already following you on nostr, though.
reply
Thanks for following me.
I used a different nick on that one, but it's not scalable in the least, not discoverable at all.
I'll be posting about more on Nostr soon, after I'm done with me freelance work, I'll finally start working on #meetstr.
