pull down to refresh

I really enjoy reading H.L. Mencken. He was a U.S. writer/journalist covering politics and culture in the mid 20th century. He was smart and funny as hell. If you're interested in giving him a try, check out A Mencken Chrestomathy.
He had lots of memorable quotes, but I think this was my favorite:
The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
I've never read his actual work, but I have often thought on and quoted him:
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
Very relevant to our space.

It's great to keep the Chrestomathy or his diary nearby to flip through. He's very entertaining and you can just open to a page and get engrossed.
