"To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed
The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress
The hate of men will pass, and dictators die
And the power they took from the people will return to the people
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men
Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!
You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful
To make this life a wonderful adventure
Let us use that power!
Let us all unite!"
Other lyrics too -
Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind
From which we'll rise over love
Over hate
From this iron sky
That's fast becoming our minds
Over fear and into freedom
Freedom!
Thought I'd add that these words came from Chaplin's movie, The Great Dictator.
Chaplin knew that he'd have to retire his popular Tramp character if ever the Tramp was ever to open his mouth on film.
It should be noted that Chaplin was streets ahead of most people in the U.S. in understanding the threat. The movie was released in 1940, the war ended in 1945.
There was a personal reason for Chaplin - he said he felt he knew Hitler almost as well as he knew himself.
Chaplin was born April 16 1889
Hitler was born.... April 20 1889
Both born in impoverished families with abusive fathers.
Originally Hitler tried to become an artist but failed and became a despot.
Chaplin performed on stage as a child and succeeded making The Great Dictator
They both sported a small, black 'toothbrush' mustaches.
One made millions laugh, he was the most famous person in the world due to his silent, universal comedy.
The other became infamous in making millions cry (and die).
