Cats don't care what you think really. If a cat could write they would never waste their time doing this.
I love dogs. I grew up having dogs. Dogs are different, not better than cats. The arguments like that are dumb and usually from people that haven't had both for long periods of time.
Cats are very intelligent. They aren't dumb as many say. The reason people say cats are dumb is because they are not easy to train like dogs are. Dogs are like a loyal friend that is always happy to see you. I love dogs for that reason. I love cats for other reasons.
Cats are like people. They have personalities. Some are very social. We have cats that follow us around just like a dog does. Some are very curious. Some are very entertaining. It isn't a week that goes by that I don't laugh about something one of the cats did. Some cats do not like to be held. Some love affection. Some love to sleep next to you. Others have no desire to do that. Cats do what cats want to do. They are far more like humans than dogs. I think this is one reason many dog lovers don't like cats. They are to independent. They are like that annoying libertarian free thinker that always has to do something his way. The dog is like that friend you can never get rid of. They just love you no matter what.
Cats can fend for themselves. Cats really don't need us. I mean we make their lives easier but believe me, they don't need us in the way dogs need us. I live in an area where dogs and cats are dropped off and I can tell you there is a big difference between the two. Dogs usually don't survive on their own unless they develop a pack. Cats don't need a pack. This difference explains a lot of their behavior differences.
20 years ago I didn't care at all about cats. I didn't dislike them but I didn't appreciate how loving and enriching they could be to our lives. I love our cats and they seem to enjoy my company as well. Sure, when we are gone for a week or two all I have to do is make sure they are fed and that's all they need. But, when we come home they are happy to see us. If you could watch them you would agree.
I guess my point is, if you are considering a pet. Consider a cat. Consider a dog. One is not better than the other. Maybe one is better for you and your lifestyle but they are both great companions. Just different.
Very good post. I am in complete agreement, so maybe that's why I like your post. I was raised around cats and dogs. No one believes me when I say I don't prefer one over the other. Your points re personality are apt. I have had independent, aloof dogs. I have a cat now who is more needy of human affection than any dog I've owned, including having to deal with separation anxiety.

Yeah, after we are gone for a while a couple of our cats will not shut up. They just meow and want us to hold them.
