By the time the competition is over, the USD price could increase drastically. Not every business may be in a position to torch an unknown, and potentially large, amount of capital. Still too early for that.

It's probably Bitcoin that they already have on hand, but ultimately it doesn't matter. It's not our decision to make - it's theirs.

Curious that these kinds of contests denominate the prize in USD. It seems like an obvious type of transaction, where everybody involved should be fine with the fluctuations between then and now in either direction.
Alas, I'm being annoying. Great to see this type of contest!

In a bearish scenario it could be less than $15k by award date, and since things like rent and food are priced in dollars its more practical for builders to factor the dollar value of the prize so they can budget risk/reward on their time
The real reward is in what you've built, the money buys you time to work on it
