According to this article, all it takes is to make slight, unnoticeable changes in the rhythm to create an engaging groove. What do you guys think? Which artist does it best? For me, it's Skrillex. I've you've ever studied his songs, he creates the most engaging percussion that builds up to amazing climaxes in each song. "SORRY" by Justin Bieber is a perfect example (produced by Skrillex).

I-V-vi-IV chord progression is usually a good start.

Has been interesting watching the progression of music evolve in the last decade.
this is exactly what I hear more and more of these days from "boundary pushing" stuff. Music's been getting faster paced, more erratic, and emblematic of our sporatic consumption of media due to the internet, social media, etc.
I fkn love Death Grips. They captured this shift in music perfectly on their 2012 record The Money Store. Deals in the woes of relationships culture and communication in the age of the internet. Among other things. Very paranoid, very visceral. We could orange pill Death Grips for sure.

Quite abrasive. Be ready for an auditory massacre.
Extremely catchy (to me) once you get a feel for it

Skrillex is an underrated artist for sure. The dude absolutely knows what he's doing and how to produce. He's exceptionally clever with how he does things.
But the four chord magic is undefeated aswell 😉

What makes a hit? Distribution.

how many hits can you think of that didn't have wide distribution?

In the EDM world I know plenty of self made artists whose music speaks for itself. No team, no paid promotion, just making beats and posting them to soundcloud...fast forward 2 years and they're headlining festivals.

It used to be about energy and raw channeled emotion. Now most "hits" are like musical porn. Ear Masterbation. Luckily we are moving back into a free media space where real artists will flourish.
