Is it true that Jesus died by crucifixion? Each prophet has his own miracles. Since one of Jesus' miracles reads "raising the dead", could Jesus have been killed by crucifixion? I am a Muslim, and our holy book says that Jesus was not killed by crucifixion. Jesus completed His mission and withdrew.
From The Annals of Imperial Rome, by Tacitus (ca 56 to 117 AD) writing sometime in the late first or early second century AD:
"But neither human resources, nor imperial munificence, nor appeasement of the gods, eliminated sinister suspicions that the fire had been instigated. To suppress this rumor, Nero fabricated scapegoats-and punished with every refinement the notoriously depraved Christians (as they were popularly called). Their originator, Christ, had been executed in Tiberius' reign by the governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate. But in spite of this temporary setback the deadly superstition had broken out afresh, not only in Judea (where the mischief had started) but even in Rome. All degraded and shameful practices collect and flourish in the capital.
"First, Nero had self-acknowledged Christians arrested. Then, on their information, large numbers of others were condemned - not so much for incendiarism as for their anti-social tendencies. Their deaths were made farcical. Dressed in wild animals skins, they were torn to pieces by dogs, or crucified, or made into torches to be ignited after dark as substitutes for daylight. Nero provided his Gardens for the spectacle, and exhibited displays in the Circus, at which he mingled with the crowd - or stood in a chariot, dressed as a charioteer. Despite their guilt as Christians, and the ruthless punishment it deserved, the victims were pitied. For it was felt that they were being sacrificed to one man's brutality rather than to the national interest."
From Antiquities of the Jews by Flavius Josephus - writing sometime in the late first century.
"About this time there lived Jesus, a wise man, if indeed one ought to call him a man. For he was one who performed surprising deeds and was a teacher of such people as accept the truth gladly. He won over many Jews and many of the Greeks. He was the Christ. And when, upon the accusation of the principal men among us, Pilate had condemned him to a cross, those who had first come to love him did not cease. He appeared to them spending a third day restored to life, for the prophets of God had foretold these things and a thousand other marvels about him. And the tribe of the Christians, so called after him, has still to this day not disappeared."

Historical documents are important. They contain clues. Thanks for sharing.

I'm curious what do you think now: what happened to Jesus?
reply
Don't know. But he was definitely not killed. How do I know? Because that's what it says in the Qur'an, which I have never been able to prove that any of its sentences are false or lie.

lie, then?

Most likely, another human being was killed. There are 666 verses in the Qur'an . To this day, I have not been able to find a fault.

  1. "What advantage did the Jews gain from executing their wise king?" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mara_bar_Serapion_on_Jesus
  2. 'their ceremonies by reference to a man punished by extreme suffering for his wickedness, and to the deadly wood of the cross" https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/fronto.html
  3. "The Christians, you know, worship a man to this day - the distinguished personage who introduced their novel rites, and was crucified on that account (...) from the moment that they are converted, and deny the gods of Greece, and worship the crucified sage" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passing_of_Peregrinus
"Most likely, another human being was killed."
So, why do you ask: "What happened to Jesus?" - if you already know "better", what happened to Jesus?
LOL
reply
I think what happened to Jesus is still unknown. The articles you give as examples may be incorrect. Because there are different versions of the Bible. However, there had to be only one Bible. Result: Bible has been manipulated by the enemies of Jesus. I wanted to point this out.
That's because Islam wants the Anti-Christ in many branches and so it lies in order to bring that about.
reply
I believe the only trusted source of information about Jesus is the Bible.
reply
Well, according to the bible, he died crucified, I don't know what the Koran says about that, but the truth is that Jesus had a mission, which was to spread the word of God, and in a way he achieved it, no matter how he died.
reply
The canonical Christian teaching is that He truly died. Or at least His body did, while His soul "descended to Hell" where He proclaimed victory over sin and Death itself (search for "Harrowing of Hell" for details, however little is actually said about it in the Bible itself).
(Some interpretations believe that through this act he also "opened the Heavens" and liberated all the righteous that died before him.)
He then resurrected Himself (being part of the Divine Trinity and all) as a divine act (further demonstrating His dominance over Death), and eventually ascended into Heaven, body and soul, but that, I believe, is out of scope of your question.
TL;DR: Canonical Christian belief is that Jesus really died by crucifiction, entered afterlife, defeated Death, resurrected Himself, thus completing His mission.

and quick and simple rhetorical question:
Who would like to trigger a new "religion" about six hundred years later, in which he was not able to deny Jesus' presence, but at least tried to: deny of well proven historical fact of his death by crucifixion and this way to indirectly nullify all other things described above?

hint: "There are 666(6) verses in the Qur'an."

I don't know what you're getting at. 666 as "number of the beast" seems to be a linguistic construct coming from the Greek language. I fail to see how that bears any significance on a book written in the Arabic culture.
I think it's intellectually dishonest to attach absolute meanings based on local social constructs.
And 6666 is a different number altogether, which might have a different meaning. On top of that, I wasn't actually able to find that exact number anywhere. A more common number I could find by googling randomly was 6236.

For people from Arabic culture - insignificant.
For people that know the genesis of 666 and observing them from outside: may be or may be not - significant.
Sorry, there is no intellectual dishonesty here, as you are trying to convince.
And please read again what I have written in previous comment above yet. The "6666" matter (taken from @oraltosun quote, btw) - is only like a dotting the "i" here, the final touch.

I still fail to see what your thesis is. That the entirety of Islam is the work of the Devil? Or that its purpose is to deny Jesus' significance?
Personally, I pay attention to people's actions much more than to their justifications and beliefs. So for me all this numerology or bickering over which two-millenia-old piece of paper is a more accurate record of history, is mostly irrelevant.
reply
You misunderstood. The Quran is not a history book. What I mean is that the Quran has been preserved unchanged since the first moment. And For us, all people are equal. Based on this, all prophets are equally valuable. Saying that Jesus might not have been murdered does not mean devaluing him.
reply
Saying that Jesus might not have been murdered - and saying that despite of so many historical sources confirming this historical fact - does mean devaluing him, because this way Jesus couldn't accomplish his Mission: entering afterlife, defeating Death, resurrecting Himself for the Redemption of mankind.
And this is exactly what Satan would love to hear from everyone. And Muhammad after his first revelation thought it was Satan. (Sira No. 154, Ishaq).
Everything fits like a glove. I'm sorry.
as a side note: Quran 4:158 states that Jesus is not dead and Allah took him up unto himself. But verse 19:33 says that Jesus will die and will be resurrected. It looks like Quran simultaneously says that Jesus died and didn't die...
Anyway, after his first revelation:
"Muhammad thought it was Satan who squeezed him since it tortured him. It was Kahdija his wife who concluded that it was angel Gabriel because it disappeared when she and Muhammad performed sexual acts" [Sira No. 154, Ishaq]. https://silawantribe.com/category/quran/
So, denying of well proven historical fact of Jesus' death by crucifixion, while it was well confirmed by so many historical sources and so many independent and unfriendly to Christians witnesses - is the obvious and perfect way to deny the further consequences (Jesus entered afterlife, defeated Death, resurrected Himself)
Now painful, but pure logic: Muhammad was right and Kahdija was wrong.
reply
OK. As mentioned, I do not trust sources other than the Quran. Because the only source that has not changed since the first day is the Quran.
Christian scholars cite the resurrection of the dead and medical healing as examples of Jesus' miracles. They also believe that someone with such miracles was killed. How do you explain this?
