I see the value in ownership of decentralized domains names (as opposed to the current centralized system where one leases from a registrar).
I find the features of ENS domains to be on the right track, but the fact there are renewal fees means (in my opinion) you never really own the domain. Of course it has other problems too [1].
So obviously my preference would be something built on top of the bitcoin blockchain because that tech is rock solid. And I feel like I heard Shinobi make a passing comment in a podcast somewhere this type of system might work on bitcoin.
I am aware of the unstoppable domains and stacks projects, but my gut tells me those are centralized solutions that may not be successful long term. I have not seen much technical documentation/discussion on either (please point me in the right direct if there is).
So are there other bitcoin projects out there attempting this? Or in the long run are domains names going to become irrelevant for reasons I’m overlooking?
Same issue as with ENS domains, but for reference:

Wake me up when it does work on normie browsers and there are no renewals necessary anymore.

Would you explain how "a .BTC domain" running in Stacks could count as "based on the Bitcoin blockchain"? Doesn't Stacks simply hash a copy of their own blockchain to a transaction in Bitcoin? And in what way does the .BTC domain in Stacks require the Stacks or Bitcoin blockchains for its existence?

since an internet domain has many applications beyond sending and receiving money, why would you want to marry such a project to the bitcoin blockchain? Why not something like a distributed and redundant white/yellow pages, which people could update with their private keys as necessary. This doesn't require a blockchain.
It does require a reconsideration of how we access user facing webservers over the internet using commercial browsing technology. I don't know nearly enough about this stuff but I feel confident none of these service ever used blockchain techology to underpin their service.

Technically you could take any smart contract on Ethereum and Fork it on Bitcoin Sidechain RSK which is a Bitcoin EVM compatible sidechain with 60% mergemined hash power of Bitcoin. The monetary asset for gas on RSK is Bitcoin technically RBTC. IOVlabs has their own RNS infrustructure .RSK that uses their own RIF token and RBTC. https://developers.rsk.co/rif/rns/operations/register/
Not the biggest fan of this approach for many reasons but the option is always there. If you are techy you could also create your own RNS protocol on top of RSK and demand the use of only RBTC for creation of domain names as it is all opensource software.

I agree with that. I would love to pay a lot to own many variations of firstname-lastname domains. And I have a few ideas for fun websites I'd like to make. But I really don't need another running cost on my household expenses.
