Do you know why the number of asylum applications are so high in Germany? Or is it just a preconception I had?
I think most Germans are too afraid to say anything against immigration even if it's potentially illegal immigration since we triggered two world wars already and one was the direct cause of a National Socialism party rising to power. Hence, it's pretty easy to make us feel guilty (again) for past mistakes when we openly oppose immigration.
We can't even talk about being proud of our country anymore. That triggers too many people, lol
France on the other hand has a "riot culture". I like it because they are willing to fight for their rights. Even though I have to admit, the most French people I met are too proud of their country. They are so proud, they don't even really learn English. They expect that you talk their language as a tourist. There are exceptions of course. But that's my experience. And sometimes, this experience can also be very funny. [0]
[0] When I was in France with friends, we went into a store but didn't know how to say what we want. A very friendly customer tried to help us since he realized we can't talk much French and the lady in the store didn't understand English. He also didn't understand English but still wanted to help. We tried to tell him that we don't know what we want yet and we need to discuss. He thought for a few seconds. We thought he understood us. But then, he suddenly pointed at a potato and said: "Pomme de terre?". We still laugh about this incident. He was very friendly though.
Yes, that's it

I see, thank you. Although I may be biased, for the communication issue in English I think it is a problem of education, maybe also mixed with anti-American propaganda inherited from De Gaulle.
