This week, I decided to share our hike through Maligne Canyon back in March 2022. Maligne Canyon is located in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, which we visited during our spring 2022 family road trip. Normally, river and waterfalls flow through the canyon (see picture below linked from Wikipedia), but everything freezes over in winter, during which time people can descend into the valley to walk and explore on the frozen river.
Everything was still frozen when we visited, so we had to put on micro spikes to safely walk the trail. The trail started at the top of the canyon and the trail, connected by multiple bridges, continued along the top of the canyon. When we looked into the valley, we could see people below walking on the frozen river. About midway through the trail, we found a spot that allows us to descend into the valley. Without hesitation, our whole family went down to explore the valley down below. It was the first time our family had walk on a frozen river, and it felt quite special. We took our time to explore and enjoy the experience. It was a relatively easy, short, but fun hike; especially fun when done in winter, when descending down into the valley becomes possible.

Eventually, we got down into the valley.
Some of the ice was melting, but most still frozen.

Yea man, covid was a bitch. Our family had a 10 day road trip driving from BC, Canada to Utah booked and ready to go for March 2020, but we had to cancel last minute because there were talks of closing borders. We finally get to go on this road trip in March 2023, 3 years after the original plan. But man, the national parks in Utah did no disappoint.
Where did you plan to go hiking in Canada for your trip?
