Now that Stacker News has changed from being Bitcoin and Tech centered to having territories, it might be a good thing for territory owners to be able to have some search engine optimization (SEO) control in order to get search engines (and with it new visitors/users) to know about their territory and the greater site.
However, for this to happen each territory would surely have a subdomain rather than a subdirectory.
For example, instead of:
you'd have
https:// bitcoin_beginners.stacker.news/
I've only dabbled with SEO in the past and am unsure of the pros and cons for both SN and domain owners (and any future symbiosis between them) but perhaps it'd be a good idea to discuss this at the early stages of territory development.
Having a subdomain isn't as effective has having a subfolder on a site, a subdomain is seen more as a new site, so you don't often inherit the link equity of the primary domain
If you want to improve SEO, I'd say add things like
  • Canonical tags
  • Custom title and meta description options for posts and territories
  • Custom open graph tagging for posts and territories
  • Breadcrumbs for posts under territories
  • Having posts live under the territories subfolder ie https://stacker.news/~bitcoin_beginners/cheese/post-name
  • XML sitemaps per territory
  • Schema for different post types

Yeah, I knew being seen as a new site had a tradeoff.
Largely being a folder, and not a subdomain, the work is down to k00b et al. I'm sure they could see that this would happen, and they're totally bright sparks, so they knew. I guess it's all part of their service.
Excellent stuff. With your website knowledge creating https://thebitcoinmanual.com you should certainly know your SEO.
