This is fascinating and I can immediately identify the same urge in me. I'd guess the motivation is that you get all the satisfaction of building a shelter but it only requires primitive skills and tools, and unlike most asymmetries, this one is intuitive.
Going to have to watch this guy dig his tunnel. His channel reminds me of MythBusters.

I remember digging a giant deep hole with some friends out on the farm growing up. The land owner wasn't too happy because he was scared one of his cows might fall in. (Rightfully so.)
And anytime I am at the beach, I love to dig me a hole. Nothing deep enough to kill me though

Maybe we should be building our citadels underground.
I haven't done much digging but it doesn't take much effort to understand that it'd be rewarding. I used to watch videos of primitive homes being built in jungles to relax
I wonder if they would've dug underground if the folks living there weren't also mining. Probably not. I haven't heard of other deserts with underground homes.
