An entertaining weekend of sports with the NBA all star festivities, UFC and a couple stadium series NHL games. The NBA all star game was the worst of the bunch to be sure.
Congrats to @Kaffi and @Undisciplined for both winning the UFC 298 pick 'em. I did not have a contingency for a tie after the tiebreaker so I just paid both 2000 sats. Thankfully it was only 2, we were very close to having a 3 way tie. Kaffi has yet to lose a UFC pick 'em yet. I am hesitant to call it a 3peat since we essentially ended in a draw but definitely an undefeated streak.
I would still like to do something similar to the NBA trade contest but with the NHL trade deadline. I will post something this week.
If you watched any of the all star festivities on Friday and Saturday night you will have noticed the use of an LED court. Personally, I thought it was pretty cool for the events but I didn't like game action on it. Seemed like a far too real video game. The NBA also announced NBAI which seems to be some generative AI platform for basketball viewership. They did not do a very good job of explaining what it will be used for, just showed NBA highlights in spiderman style. It appears the NBA is really making a push to be the league at the forefront of the digital age and attract the tik tok generation viewers. Seems all a bit gimmicky to me but I am getting old.
If you saw the court of the NBAI reveal let me know your thoughts.
Spring Training games start Thursday. I can't wait. I am sure I will be bored of ST games after about a week but it will be nice to have baseball back.
Sats for all, GR
I think it's time for the NBA to follow the NFL and just abandon its abomination of an all-star game. I suggest a 3-on-3 tournament of short games to 11 or 15. Let's at least get something that isn't just a worse version of what we get all season.

I was really against the NFL turning the probowl into a circus show. But actually, I really like it, sure some of them are silly "games" but they do showcase the skills and really, that's what I wanna see is top tier athletes showing just how good they are.

There are a few of the skills competition games that I like. Many I can do without.
reply
I'm with ya, I stopped seeing it as real competitive and mostly started seeing it as funfair carnival style stuff that's for silly entertainment. And with that view I can mostly tolerate some of the silliness.

I would be down for a 3 on 3 tournament.
What if they did something similar to the Rising Stars game and split the all stars on 4 teams and have 2 semi final games and then an all star final. East gets 2 teams and West gets 2 teams.
Maybe after the semis let the captains of the winning teams draft 1 player from each of the losing teams.

You know, that might work really well. The first half of the All-Star game wasn't nearly as bad as the second (full disclosure: I stopped watching in the 3rd). Three shorter games with a draft gimmick, might just keep the players interested.

It makes sense that the rising stars games were more competitive. These guys are still trying to prove themselves and they were playing against a G league team. Maybe the team that wins the Rising Stars should be the 4th team in the All Star tournament. These guys are not going to want to lose to a bunch of rookies.

I saw the NBAI YouTube clip of Silver and Wemby doing some demo. I don't have a thorough understanding of its capabilities and functions, but from the surface, I agree with you that it is quite gimmicky and would probably fail miserably. I could be wrong and this could become the future of sports viewing, but from what I saw, I find it to be nothing but a gimmick.
I thought the LED court was only good for festivities like the all star events and for special effects when players enter the court in the beginning of the game. One practical use I can think of is its capability to change courts (lines in particular) without having to rework the flooring. You can change from an NBA court to a WNBA court to a volley ball court to a dodge ball court etc etc in an instant. That saves time and labor. But please don't put any live effects on the court during a game like what they did in the celebrity game; it just cause confusion and make the game very messy to watch.

Good analysis. It's fun for special events but not an actual game.
As for the AI, someone posted another video where you can scan yourself and put yourself into the highlight as one of the players. That's cool for a novelty. I could definitely see people using that a lot on social media with clips of themselves dunking on other people. I guess that is good for keeping NBA constantly top of mind but I am not sure how this enhances viewer experience. I am not going to watch a game with myself as Lebron James. Maybe some people will though.

Catering to narcissism and the desire to show results without putting in the work. Not my cup of tea.

Yes, Seems a little dystopian as well. Put on a headset and AI will let you simulate any life you want.

Better than I could do. Notice how I host the contest and don't participate. I did for fun in the first football one I did and I went 0/3
