As a follow-up to my recent post on global population decline (#437099), I was inspired to share this article from The Telegraph about the the worldwide decline in sexual activity.
Here are a few stats from the article:
United Kingdom:
  • The average number of sexual liaisons per week has decreased over time: 1991: 5 times per month 2001: 4 times per month 2012: 3 times per month
Germany:
  • A 2019 study found only 52% of Germans have sex at least once per month, down from 56% five years earlier.
France:
  • A 2021 IFOP poll found that 39% of French people aged 18-24 had not had sex in the last year, up 10 points from the previous survey in 2009.
  • Among 25-39 year olds, 27% had not had sex in the last year, up 5 points.
  • 52% of French women said they sometimes had sex without really wanting to, down from 76% in 1981.
Japan:
  • A 2020 survey found 43.9% of married Japanese aged 20-59 were in sexless marriages, while 24.3% said their marriages were "nearly sexless".
South Korea:
  • According to a 2021, about one out of three adults living in Seoul have not had sexual intercourse for over a year.
The article also mentions several potential causes:
  • Increased use of digital devices/screens.
  • Feelings of exhaustion, especially among middle-aged women: A potential cause detected in UK data was that women feel too tired for sex due to having a lot going on in their lives.
  • Less pressure to be sexually active
  • Increased solo pleasures: The easy availability of porn online, as well as sex toys
ANONYMOUS POLL:
Had no sex in the last week15.8%
Had no sex in the last month10.5%
Had no sex in the last trimester 8.8%
Had no sex in the last year19.3%
None of the above35.1%

How about “not in the mood”? It’s 11pm here. My baby girl is crying and not sleeping yet. By the time I put her to sleep, I also want to sleep myself. I have to wake up at 5.30am tomorrow to do housework. Haha

This
After having kids it seems that sexual activity drops quite a bit. At least we used it for what it was meant for though. Lol
reply
Sex is not only about having kids, sex is also a good thing to enjoy with your partner. It's healthy, it's pleasure, it's a sport activity and it's for Free.

Can we afford such a hedonistic view on sex, considering the much bigger issue of population decline?
reply
Yeah because exponential population growth can go on forever and the earth is underpopulated.
reply

reply
Not just Europe. I was going to bring up the American testosterone decline. Pretty soon, I think this is going to be the biggest topic in the world.

How can that show 2022 in the title, and then 2017 as the data source?
reply
Maybe they used a predictive model? dunno really, but good catch!

Imo people are starting their life together later due to housing prices, they leave parents home later in life, by that time you have less libido, also daily routine, hours lost in traffic, women and men both working, having kids also drains everyone, and even when chilling it's not unusual for each one to be doing there thing on the mobile or PC. So you are not talking or interacting with the other to the get drive for sex.
reply
Yeah, and if you keep looking, you'll notice that the money printer is at the source of this issue as well!
reply
It's possible that the world was having TOO MUCH sex before, hence a population of nearly 9 billion.
reply
Yeah, I think the article mentions something similar. They talk about a trend reversal, if I rember correctly
reply
In all seriousness, I think it's related to how so many people prefer texting on their phones—social anxiety. And there's a general lack of energy, lack of interest, and apathy pervading society. Japan has it worse than Western countries, but we're not far behind.
Also, the male “interest in sex” hasn't diminished, but he satisfies it by himself without bothering to pursue women.
And this crap doesn't help—
reply
They're just waiting for the right time ...

Indeed, as the saying goes, you can't have it all. It's not uncommon for couples with demanding jobs to have fewer children, and more and more women entering the job market over the past century has exacerbated the situation.

I suspect some people also don't make it a priority in a long term relationship and would rather zone out in front of netflix with some 🍻 🍷 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have a suspicion there is some of that going on.
reply
Correct. Also mentioned in the article

Where's your "Had sex yesterday" option?
Edit: Oh I get it, it's none of the above, haha
reply
Depends with who, Same person or another!
reply
Wow. I better get out there and do my part to up the numbers!
reply
I blame dating apps
reply
Shouldn't it be the opposite?
reply
Dating app success is asymmetrical. Women only swipe 10 percent of men
reply
Yes! Great point, thanks.
reply
Is that term trimester supposed to refer to an academic trimester or to a pregnancy trimester.
reply
Somewhere along the way, men finally figured out that less than half of the women actually like having sex. Also, men got tired of all the strain that goes with maintaining their side of a relationship, where the woman can and does 'just say no'.
reply
There's plenty of other stuff these days. But I suspect that other stuff really impact sexual drive. Also, today's lifestyle might have side effects on overall sexual density.
reply
sigh.. unzips...

it’s only the beginning: #438392
reply
Yes, unfortunately. Still, #438578...

So, the survey is for people not having any sex? If you're having lots of sex do you click on one of the last 2 options?
reply
For everyone. For those sexually active, the last two options apply, yes

if think practically, earth has a lot of human crawling the surface but its not enough to be a reasonable reason to stop from growing.. Or other solution was to engage for pure "fun" only and not for family purposes
