I’m a big fan of DHH, who is one of the co-founds of Basecamp, which I’ve been using daily for 7 years, so anything they say about tech, I’m happy to read!
They have a recent negative history with Apple and my buddy and I have been talking about switching from Apple to Android for years but iMessage is keeping me locked in. His post today gave me hope overall that it’s a lot easier to switch than I thought, as my perception of Android is that it’s messy and buggy _but I think my line of thinking is pretty dated. _
What the whole thing has shown me more than anything is that computing freedom requires that you don't put all your eggs in one basket. That’s how you get stuck with a bunch of rotten eggs, if the basket suddenly falls apart. And Apple has been falling apart for me in terms of trustworthiness, stewardship, and just overall likability over the past few years. Is Google some perfect alternative? Absolutely not! But I’m not switching from Apple to Google as much as I’m switching from Apple to a constellation of strong but distinct alternatives. >
What are your thoughts on Apple and their walled Garden? Are you an Apple user or have you abandoned that ship along time ago?
Don't switch from Apple to Google, switch from Apple to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and use Obtainium to install apk files from their respective github if you must.

Great advice. How complicated is this for someone that’s mostly tech savy but not to the level of being aware of AOSP. What type of phone would this be installed on? My questions are probably a bit too simplistic but you get where I’m going.

For the Graphene OS AOSP fork, these are the compatible phones: https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-support
You gotta make sure to get it "unlocked" so no buying a phone plan during the purchase.
Then follow the web installer instructions https://grapheneos.org/install/web
Alternatively, you can do the don't install it yourself option (which is inherently sketchy and inherently opens you up to abuse) by buying a preinstalled one.

Wow, incredible info. I really appreciate this and will be doing a deep dive!

I was 100% all in on apple. Have been for 10+ years now. No more. Fuck the App store. They turned into a worst version of the Microsoft they mocked in their 1984 ad.
I used to have nearly every Apple device. But im souring to them. Lots of little things, like making Damus remove the zaps feature.. wtaf
GrapheneOS, linux, OSS, all kinds of things are helping me replace Apple.
MacBooks are still the best laptops tho... like OP said, its not about replacing apple, but building a constellation of personal computing solutions.

This is exactly my mindset. I’m starting to get concerned with how apple is coming across and want to make sure that I’m prepared to make a switch with as much knowledge as possible.

They want to take away PWAs in Europe?!
Burn apple down!
They are becoming enemy #1.

That story about PWA is what made me go ok, I need to look at something else or at least understand what that process is like because I love the Mutiny wallet and for them block PWA, not cool.
