Why keep this as a unnecessary talking point to leftists? Just remove the minimum wage completely, it doesn't actually exists in reality anyway.

interesting, i’m actually surprised democrats haven’t taken action to raise the minimum wage recently.
i agree that the number basically does nothing, but it’s a talking point democrats can use to explain how they’re helping low income earners.

I think it might be the same reason neither party tries to solve the problems they campaign on: they'd have to find something else to campaign on.
Minimum wage has the added problem of making life worse for the poor on average (it's extremely complicated and we can get into the details if anyone wants to) and most of the Democrat run states already have huge problems with homelessness. Actually raising it significantly would be gas on the fire.

Most areas set the local minimum wage higher than the federal minimum, and that practice has been accelerating, so of course you'd see less people getting paid the bare minimum

this is interesting because it assumes a culture of tipping being normalized. i'm not really sure it makes sense for restaurants unless it also makes sense for other service-based industries.

According to The Economic Policy Institute, there are 30 states (plus DC) where the minimum is higher than the federal wage, and a few localities that also have higher rates (though it looks like only Birmingham, AL is in a state that sticks to $7.25). So I guess I'm not shocked at this -- even in the remaining 20 states, there's got to be a push to increase those wages, especially given inflation's impact on groceries and rent.

The minimum wage in South Africa is $1,45 an hour and if you learn less than $2.35 an hour you don't pay any income tax and a lot of people fall into that range or even prefer to remain in that range and then get paid cash for extra days.
I never really understood the minimum wage apart from being a political talking point, people are going to monetise their time and couldn't be arsed by what people who don't work a day job decide the price should be
