Had heard of the misery index prior to reading this but wasn’t sure how it was calculated. Shouldn’t it encompass more than just unemployment and inflation?
Well, this is only the Misery II index. We could add other stuff and make a Misery III index.
What would you most want to add?
Bankruptcy rate came to mind for me. It has to be something fairly small, so that it doesn't dominate unemployment and inflation. Maybe things like incarceration or net mortality rates.

Yes I would think it needs some measures beyond economic ones.

A lot of that other negative stuff is thought to be downstream of unemployment and inflation, so it might not be as lacking of an indicator as it initially seems.

I could see that. Crime, drug addiction etc are often caused by lack of financial stability and sense of purpose and opportunity
