Far into the future, one can imagine that following circumstances for Bitcoin users and node operators: 1. high on-chain fees 2. high cost of running a full node due to the cost of storage
If the fees a miner would have to pay in order to spend their reward why have such rewards in the first place? Are there any solutions in the works? Could lightning help?

I think asking this, it speaks the shitcoiner inside you. If in 2024, after 6 years of LN existence you still ask this, that means you still do not understand what represent LN for Bitcoin.
Bitcoin cannot go further without LN. And LN cannot exist without Bitcoin mainnet. Are many things to be improved in LN? YES, definitely. But LN is just a baby that barely start walking on his own feet now.

I hope LN would help. I just find it hard to imagine how a transaction without inputs could be sent over LN...
