I'm currently reading Mark Manson's "Everything's Fcked: A book about hope", and I've noticed that, for some reason, I'm "hiding" the book from my family; I don't want them to see me read it.
Maybe because they could think I'm some kind of softie? Or that I'm depressed? Hm.
Anyways, this got me thinking: Are there other people who do this, if so, what's the genre, the title and the why?
Is it because we're looking for some advice or answers on topics or questions we don't want to ask out loud? Something we want to find out and keep for ourselves? Hm.
I'm keen on hearing from y'all
PS: the book's great so-far, I absolutely adore his style of writing.
I belong to a traditional Hindu Brahmin Family. Our culture is such that we live in an extended combined family and that we aren't much open about sex and related stuff.
So, when I was pursuing masters in English Literature, 'Kamsutra's English Version' was one of the books that I had to read under 'English Translations of Indian Classical Texts' and though I still have that book, but it's always placed in a locker.

Ai, that's a hot iron indeed... 🤭😜

I didn't want anyone to see me reading The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck, for obvious reasons-they thought I did.
reply
Yeah, that's a book from the same author I'm reading from right now, how was it?

It's one of those self help books that look to teach you to keep things in perspective, don't let others affect your actions or self confidence, and not to take anything too seriously. It was enjoyable and useful, but like most self help books, you forget to apply the lessons a day or so after you're done reading it.
reply
Hm, as expected, you're spot-on on the last part though!
reply
Nope, though it does seem that advice/self-help would be the most likely (especially if I was reading something about relationship help).
reply
Yep, same.
reply
Keep on reading and be proud. Don't hide.

I did from my wife. I bought quite some scientific books when I was in academia and kept most of them in the office. I didn’t have any particular reason for this, it was convenient to have books delivered directly to my workplace. Only when I left the university and brought them home she was, let’s say, a bit shocked.
reply
Shocked by... Scientific books?
reply
By the amount.
reply
Heh, no if anything I was surrounded by books and never read, I still struggle with reading, not because I can't read, I am not fully sure what my problem is, it takes me a LONG time to get through a book.
reply
Could it be that the book's simply too much in regards to pages, or that you're simply not interested in the book in the first place? I have that.
reply
Sometimes I could say that, but sometimes I actually like the book. I suppose maybe on a subconscious level I am avoiding something.
reply
Hm, what do you suspect the culprit to be?
reply
I've never had to
reply
I never really cared how people view me, so I never hide the books I'm reading. I did used to steal money from my parents when I was a little kid and buy or rent Japanese manga with the stolen money. So, I used to hide those manga from my parents and would read them in secret so they wouldn't ask about how I got them.
reply
I'm not into reading books but I'm sure that, as long as it's not physical, you can hide in a personal device of behind a protected storage, even a epub / pdf in a password protected zip is enough.
reply
Nope, I even read them in public, people don’t care and if so then it’s a good way to start a little constructive debate.
reply
Sorry you have to do that but I do wonder with ebooks how many others have been able to read books that might cause unwanted attention.
reply
Oh absolutely.
