I know of some WiFi routers that support using a VPN at to network level. I own a small travel router that supports this. Looking for a good option for a friend and wondering if stackers have any recommendations.
Ideally it would be user friendly and support wire guard, work with iVPN, Mullvad, or ProtonVPN.
I'm using a Netgear Nighthawk that I flashed with DD-WRT. I don't use my router for wireguard, but it appears it's supported. Once it's set up I've found it to be fairly user friendly, although you would want to be comfortable logging in and changing settings if needed.
Someone like Flashrouters or similar may be a good, although more expensive, option for an easy trouble free setup. They have pre-flashed routers set up for various VPN services.

Lopp was eyeing-up this as a great bit of kit for most people: Flint (GL-AX1800)
…before he described his ultra-private layered home network, suitable for even John Wick. Found that via the SN post #131191.
Looks like decent value at sub $100.

Note there's a successor to the Flint (the Flint 2) that's higher-performance. Looks pretty cool -- I'm tired of always having to figure out how to flash dd-wrt on stuff, the OpenWRT out of the box seems luxurious. Cheap (relatively) too, for what you get.

Definitely. Think https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt6000/ is a winning package. One I may consider for an office setup too.

So nervous about this. I'm a complete noob when it comes to home networking... I've always had someone else managing my internet for various reasons. Parents, college, landlord, inlaws etc. But I'm about to get wifi here in China and I'm curious how I can run Mullvad through the router. Presumably the box they give me will be proprietary... So I'm nervous...

The box they give you will be proprietary and likely contain: Modem, router, wifi hotspot, and switch, all in one. First thing to do is limit this box to function only as the modem. That separation is crucial. The Flint 2.0 looks pretty compelling. Do a bit of research for a VPN that works in China, and that should provide a good travel solution.
