Following his abdication, Diocletian would peacefully enjoy his retirement at his private palace (in Split) for a few years before internal trouble began to stir within the empire yet again. In response to this new crisis, a delegation of friends and former colleagues went to Diocletian’s palace and pleaded with him to return to the political arena to use his immense influence and once again set the empire straight. Diocletian, in a now legendary response, would reportedly say something to the effect of “If only you knew the peace and tranquility I gain from tending and growing my cabbages, you would understand the impossibility of such a request!”
