I used to play clarinet in my highschool band. Worked my way from beginner to first clarinet through the 5 years that I was there, because I actually spent time practicing. I also picked up tenor sax as my second instrument for the band in my 3rd year because we were lacking tenor sax players. I stopped playing when I finished high school, but would pick up my clarinet from time to time and play for my kids.
I also learned to strum chords and sing songs on the guitar on my own. Although, I'm quite bad at playing the guitar.

Far from reaching professional level. I wouldn't even say I was pretty good at the clarinet, more like a barely minimum competent high school level player. But being in the band was fun. I remember performing in school music concerts each year; going to other schools to play in band meets; playing Christmas music in the school foyer while half the school surrounded the band and sang along; and most fun of all, traveling to different cities with the band to join and play in band meets / festivals.
