Over the past year and a half, a vibrant circular economy has formed in Vancouver, BC. There are now six regular meetup groups, from technical (Bitdevs), practical (Noderunners), to educational (BTCVAN), coffee and beers.
There are now over 80 places listed on BTCMap in the Fraser Valley, of which I'd say about 25 are the kind of places you could frequent everyday.
Five coffee shops, two breweries, three food trucks, two pubs, a sushi restaurant, a vietnamese noodle place, two kebap stands, a tattoo studio, a crepe stand, three convenience stores and even an El Salvadorian restaurant!
One important step we had to take to make this happen: Make some of the Bitcoin meetups Bitcoin-only. That means, you can only buy tickets and drinks with Bitcoin. No cash, no shitcoins, no card payments. If you don't have a wallet, there will be somebody to help you install one. If you don't have sats, you can typically buy them from somebody around you with cash or e-transfer.
We believe this approach can work anywhere, it just needs some community leaders to take the first step. And it can happen fast! Just 1.5 years ago, not a single place in Vancouver took sats.

The food selection seems pretty fire

Wow. How are your group turnouts? Does it increase every time?

Some groups are really small, others have a constant turnout of about 20-30 people, only one meetup has had more than 100 people attend regularly. Over the past year, I haven't notice an increase in the number of attendees, but maybe there are more people joining these, and we don't notice because the number of groups has increased.
We did host a block party in September (free entry, about 300 people dropped by), and a halving party (ticketed, about 120 people joined)

That’s awesome! It is a Bitcoin desert where I live. I haven’t even seen a Bitcoin ATM around.

Are there Bitcoiners around you? You might be surprised!
reply
None that I’ve been able to find…so far. But I’m still looking.

Amazing news!
How did you get the merchants to attend the Bitcoin meetups? That seems like the first challenge.
reply
Merchants rarely attend the meetups, but we do hold meetups at merchants! Most of our communication with merchants is electronic, or at their place of business.

Total TOTAL LARP
These businesses are not bitcoinER businesses, just businesses that see it as a marketing angle and auto-convert to fiat, maybe 1 in 5 will not.
