I don't know about Buddhism, but in the Abrahamic faiths marriage is supposed to be sacred, too. Those high divorce rates are a sign that those faith communities have decayed in their devotion.
reply
I think this looks high because the rates of people getting married are lowering, the barrier to save up to get married and get that starter home creeps higher and higher so household formation is put off.
I think divorce rates are also higher in countries where the state provides support or the father still contributes to the household
reply
Sounds about right. I think stress of finances and where both man and woman are working.

Morals have gone down. Americans cant keep a marriage, especially in this generation. Covid really did a number on marriages!
reply
Yes, it might be due to covid as well.
There's a respect issue as well. Men and women have to to equally respect each other. Look, we have traditions which aren't found elsewhere. Women, worship their husbands as their lord's and men worship women as the lord of the house and prosperity. We call women 'Aadishakti' meaning Half power of man. A man as I said can only complete when he respects and worships women. It's same for women. So, yes, it's kinda V4V for us.
reply
Yes, that respect is gone. Feminism has taken charge, everyone needs to be equal. Not saying that things dont need to change, I just dont think they changed in a way to help society. I do believe in respecting women and treating them with respect.
reply
We need to correct ourselves, just can't celebrate and Mother's day and women's day for just nothing. We need to respect women unconditionally. They are after all the medium of our existence.
reply
Isnt it celebrated just for nothing? Women need a holiday, thats why they have this?
reply
No, I don't think so. Ihe never asked for the reason. For me these days have been serving as reminder about that I never dip the level of my love for my mother, sister, my Niece, my wife.
And, I believe and I demand a Men's Day with all my might.
If you support me, we can form a fed for it and other stackers can also join. What do you say? Don't you want holiday or the same gifts, love, respect etc. that women get. (I'm not against but I have right to demand so you do.)
reply
No, I dont need that shit. Im not a frail man that needs his ego boosted.
reply
So, you wanna sack all these 'Women Days'?
Listen to it and think again.
85% in my country, something doesn't work...

I guess the world has changed very fast.
reply
I guess it's not. Do you have any back up data to prove your point.
reply
I think that 2020 is not a good year to consider. There were very few weddings that year because of restrictions. But divorces were still happening. Perhaps we should look to figures in recent years.
reply
You might be right, I'm going to look up recent data to see if I'm able to find anything.
reply
If you're from Spain, I can say that for recently, for 2023, you can find data where they claim it to be as high as 65% to 70%. My data is for 2021. So I agree for it being a little higher. However 70% is still higher.
reply
I think talking about divorces, anything above 40-50% is too high, we're talking about almost 8/10 couples getting divorced, something is very wrong.
GM. Just trying to share some info in your discussion. Regarding Spain , figures are too high and far from real numbers.
85% percent could be in keeping with 2020 figures. Due to COVID restrictions there were low numbers of wedding but divorces were still happening. After 2020 numbers are returning to average around 60%

Okay, so even if I agree to this, the rates are still higher. Aren't they?
reply
Yes, they are. Perhaps people prefer to stop a relationship if things are not working well , rather than keep trying.

Looks like the less traditional a country is, the higher the divorce. Just by glancing on your second image. Except Spain.
reply
Yes, you're right.

That's properly fucked-up for most countries.
reply
Really, it is! What I see that there's a particular booming market of divorce for lawyers and psychiatrists in the countries which are having higher rates.

Is it just too much shame on the family? It is interesting as I’d imagine most are arranged marriages too
reply
No, not really. Yes most are arranged marriages though!
reply
I feel like arranged marriages seem to last longer. Both in the relationship know what they are getting into.
reply
94%?? That seems pretty high...
reply
Yes, it is!
1% in my country is so low!
Should be in between somewhere? Lol.
Jokes apart, western countries need to learn a lot from Indian Culture if they ever want to save marriage institution.
reply
This site suggests that there weren't many marriages formalized in 2020 so the divorces nearly outweighed marriages that year.
reply
It's really great infographic. I'm shocked about statistics of my country
reply
You are right. India has lowest divorce rate in the world. Because of their culture. In their belief once a marriage done. It's for seven reincarnations.
reply
Nothing wrong with divorce.
You are different than when you were 8, do you spend money the same way?
Two adults getting to know each other and knowing it wouldn’t work out should be able to get a divorce and not praised for suffering together for the sake of “religion “ or “culture”.
What a depressing world that would be
reply
I think it opens the bigger question of: whats the point of marriage?
Historically, thru all cultures, Marriage was effectively a "kid contract". For that reason it makes lots of sense for society (at the insistence of women themselves) to have prohibitions against breaking the contract.
The decoupling of marriage from having kids is a relatively new invention.
reply
So, true!
reply
Personally I don’t think marriage is even necessary, other than some clear implication in law.
Historically, marriage in many societies aren’t even between a couple, it’s a man with couple of women. We moved on from arranged marriage at birth, political marriage etc.
What more proof for true union is needed if two adults willingly to stay together, with minimum barrier to exit?
reply
Amazing! I'm getting so many interesting and philosophical answers to this.

Don't judge any religion or culture based on what you actually see from outside. You mean that living together is a suffering while it's not. I'm living here and it's not depressing at all.
Secondly, IMO it's more depressing and a bigger suffering that two people who once loved each other and pledged a lifelong relationship, suddenly when their lust is over or may be because someone more attractive enters in their life, they get seperated.
Now say what a depressing world that would be? Living together is a suffering then divorcing can't be a boon, my friend!
