In T20 the margins are really tight and a good batter can certainly turn things around.. exceptional batsman often come to the fore in the chase (that’s the side who are batting second). But some batsman can score incredible numbers of runs over the course of a tournament and their team still go out in the later stages.
You surely have good experience of Cricket? Are you an Englishman? Do you play cricket at professional level? Or what's that makes you so experienced about it?

I am still so confused apparently I am selecting players that aren't even playing for England in this World Cup. I don't know why, his stats were great but definitely a fail for me. I thought I could just look at the international player list for England and pick a good one.

No, you need to look at the specific link that is about T20 World Cup. Not all players play every format of cricket. Zak Crawley is preferred as Test Batsmen in England team.
Test cricket is the longest format in Cricket as it lasts Max in 5 days. T20 on the other side is much shorter, it only takes 3 hours to conclude a game.
