Hey Freaks,
TheWildHustle is about 3 seconds away from ditching his ifoan
Instead of opting for graphene, Hustle is thinking about ditching the phone all together, and using a VOIP provider with his laptop.
Hustle understands that calls and texts will be seen and heard by the looters regardless, and doesnt understand what threat model he's solving for.......but wants to explore life without a cell phone anyway.
He's sure there might be some privacy and security benefits, but it seems as though he's mainly just focused on sticking it to "the man".
Any good/cool resources will be handsomely zapped.
Much Appreciated, Hustle
So, you gonna "slug around" a laptop everywhere you go? That's just a bigger phone... is all...lol
reply
Lol, true.
Although those faraday bags promise to prevent a certain level of tracking and surveillance, and I don't plan on taking electronics besides an mp3 player everywhere I go. I work remotely and leave the house mostly for family events and running errands.
reply
what do you want to accomplish by putting your device in a faraday bag? there is barely any benefit in doing so. you want a device you can trust not to snoop on you
reply
Saw 4 faraday bags on Amazon for 26 bucks, so figured, why not.
If I'm on the move with my laptop, it would make me feel better (stupid reason I know)

I recommend starting here:
They take Bitcoin, among others, it's dirt cheap and you can top up well in advance if you like it
All you need is wifi
This setup needs a Jabber instance and creating an account there - this one has been up for years:
You can run this whole setup on a laptop - Dino is a popular choice on Linux:
If you decide to use a mobile device like offline phone or tablet, Cheogram works great there
No need here for a cell for years now
Enjoy!

Second the recommendation for jmp.chat. I’ve been using them for a while, and they’re just the best. Their customer support are the same people as the dev team (I think), and they usually answer pretty quickly in the support channel.
Also consider looking at the Pinephone for a free-as-in-freedom smartphone. It’s not fully free (it still requires non-free drivers), but it’s about as close as we can get right now.

Will the Hustle be using the notebook method?

TheWildHustle sends his regards.
And should've attended that last meetup :)

This would be my recommendation after trying living without phone for a whole year once. Living without a phone is difficult, not worth the effort. You may not want to call anyone but people will want to contact you when you go out. However, it was really good for productivity. Recover so much time lost. You can try to live without a smart phone. There still some phones available without all the smart things and just voice calls. It is good to have it, at least to turn it on in case of an emergency.
reply
Thanks for the recommendation.
Might just buy one of those Harry Potter owls......for emergencies only.

A sim Less phone. Internet connection is the psychological leash.

We had a great discussion about living without a phone here #403323
I constantly think about this. For the time being, I'm just trying to stay off of most social media and only access Stacker News and Nostr from my laptop
reply
I respect your ambition.
reply
Thanks ruby,
Although Hustle primarily uses his phone for Primal, Stacker News, and Uber Eats.
His sacrifice might not be as great as what some might think.

Does Hustle use SN via mobile browser?
reply
Yep, but he mostly uses SN on a laptop.
reply
Same.

We all live in a "context", if your allow to detach a phone, go for it, small screen, bad input ergonomic, mostly used to "consume" and not create something... it's a win for sure.
reply
I would suggest you to keep on using it and fight against all those who have made it a sucking thing.
Just try to corrupt every data they want! Mislead them! Manipulate them! Lead them to confusion!
I've been doing it with my inputs on my phone!!!!
Even my phone numbers aren't real! All fake!! I'm faking them and feeling happy!! That's my way of fighting against the system.

Hustle is attempting to ignore clown world as much as possible.
But he doesnt blame you for tricking the tricksters.
Proud of you, freak.

Cell phone . Huge time suck and waste of life. Put ‘em down or ditch all together
reply
Its a huge distraction that I could honestly do without.

He is me.

That is such a brave move in context of today's world and needs. You're giving up on so much, but also gaining so much as well. Goodluck with that. 👍

I think that it's a cool idea, very hard to do it though.
On the weekends, when I want to be more present with my family, I just left the mobile phone at home. I feel that I've become totally addicted to it.
reply
Dump it!

What's the point of ditching the phone in the 1st place? Isn't it just a laptop you can put in your pocket? If there is an app that eats your time - just delete it. Just leave the apps you would use on the laptop and pretend you have a laptop now:) if you hate there is a number connected to use - buy data only ESIM.

TheWildHustle is one of those freaks that barely uses a phone.

I think this is good, but usually a viop phone needs a real phone to connect to.
reply
WDYM? I'm using a service called jmp.chat right now and have no other phone service and it works just fine.

Why are you talking in 3rd person? Is it just a bit?

Was wondering the same thing. It may be a sensei type experiment if I had to guess.
reply
Your guess, is as good as TheWildHustle's.
reply
TheWildHustle doesn't know.
Probably just for kicks.
reply
Don't ditch your phone. Just go the old way and use it without internet and talk in code langauge whenever you call lest your calls are tapped

My old room mate had a crappy flip phone up until about a year ago. He never had used google maps. He knew how to navigate cities as he would read about them before he visited. He is a real character.
But then in Nashville he could barely park his car without scanning some qr bullshit machine. That was the end for him. He now has smart phone.

Maybe opt into a middle ground - an ipad with a keyboard?
This could work - but in the end it would be nice to even have a minimal cellphone in case trouble arises. You never know if someone you love or care about could be injured or worse.
I think the biggest thing to focus on is a reduction in screen time for consumption, but in the end - people need to focus on production.
