Yes, I’m that nerdish Stacker who recorded down all his daily earnings for almost the entire month of May. Why almost? That’s because I didn’t want to include my Daily Rewards received on 1st June, since April only has 30 days.
Without further ado

Why conduct this experiment?
Sometimes I had this experience in which I would receive 5000-6000 sats for Daily Rewards. I couldn’t help feeling that taking part in MSM would lower my total earnings on the whole, so I decided to track my Daily Rewards for the month of May.
*Was this a fair test?
Well it isn’t purely quantitative, although I tried to keep to the same posting and commenting routine for May. I think I pushed myself harder during the MSM months of March and April, which may explain why I was placed 12th position in April.
Outcome
Seems that MSM was more favourable to me since I am a consistent contributor.
But which do I prefer?
Although I should practise the low time-preference philosophy, I rather go with Daily Rewards. It gives me reassurance that should I not do well, I can compensate for my previous lacklustre effort by posting and commenting more on subsequent days. I feel more in agency and control of my destiny!
Seems too similar to glean anything from it. SN was a bit slower in May and unless you perfectly replicated your April behaviour it’s hard to judge whether the small decrease in rewards is due to MSM, general activity on the site or your own activity.

Good point. I never considered the general activity on the site as a factor

My guess is that it's mostly due to the way Sensei gets slightly screwed by the time zone issue.
reply
Huh? I don't get it, what is this post about? Is this about a Stacker News setting I don't know about? 🤔
reply
Last month, all the rewards were paid out at the end of the month.
It was an experimental contest called Million Sat Madness that was rather controversial.
reply
Have you looked at your usage graphs on your statistics page?
I looked at mine, because I was curious about this same thing. My engagement and earning were both up in May from April.

I prefer Daily Rewards, too! I'm not getting more rewards from daily rewards, but psychologically and emotionally, I'm more inclined towards the Daily Rewards system.

Daily Rewards does add to our enjoyment of using the site

This is a good illustrative breakdown. The current incentive scheme, while not that bad (and far better than nothing), puts way too much emphasis on daily activity, and that takes a toll. The cowboy hat is great, but should consider an average over a month, not a daily minimum. You just can't be forced to be considered a good user only if you open this site every single day and with active contributions other than reading or sporadic comments. That caused me to be uninterested in the cowboy hat.
A scheme that crosses the line between compensating good interactions towards forcing interactions tends to draw back bad content, for sometimes you don't really have something to say but have to still otherwise you get nothing. I can't do that so I ended up losing the hat and my compensations dropped dramatically, yet I don't consider myself a bad user of this platform. I think that should be corrected.
reply
I think daily rewards is better. Cause most of stackers don't post high quality posts daily, however if their post hit the hearts this day it should be rewarded appropriately and only "daily rewards scheme" it allows

yeah we should incentivize newbs not those of us who are already addicted.
