At #01-03 Whampoa Market, I observed a hunchbacked elderly man painstakingly making coffee. A lady, who presumably is his wife, was busy calling their customers by name and even serving them their orders at times. When she served me my coffee, I was shocked to learn that my Kopi coffee cost a mere 90 cents. I wanted to pay $1 because I would still feel that I had gotten a sweet deal, given that I’m used to paying $1.20-1.70 for my coffee these days. She declined, saying that that was her husband’s operating philosophy.
This prompted me to post this in halting Chinese and hopefully more readable English because I think their exemplary service should be made known to others. Hopefully, more people will patronise their stall so that they won’t have to worry about making a living.

A similar thing happened to me not long ago, the coffee here fluctuates between 1.3€ and 1.8€, and I went to a coffee shop in the town and they charged me 1€ for coffee, and I told the owner that it had been at least 10 years since no one charged me only 1€ for a coffee in a coffee shop/bar, he replied "here it has been served all our life at 1€ and it will continue to be so"

Thanks for sharing. It really affirms that as long as your heart is firm n tough, outside forces cannot touch you!

I love coffee. I made a post on it before. I love these places that have long lines and cheap service. You know you are in the right place and probably have taken a path off the beaten route.
