Is it better for someone to have a wide range of superficial knowledge or deep knowledge about a few things?
Depth of knowledge in 1 thing I'd say.
Then again... Look at Satoshi. I understand that he wasn't the best coder but he put together the right combination at the right point in history

Ideally:
Deep knowledge about a few things often results in the understanding that there is nuance and depth to the things you don’t understand, and at the same time, you’re able to better recognize those patterns of truth. So when it comes to things for which you lack depth of understanding, you’re able to see the issues that matter and determine what knowledge is required to find the truth of those issues.
