This is what I used in my PhD program. It's fine, if you're going to use LaTeX.

When did you get your PhD? I only started hearing about overleaf in the last 8 years or so

Yes, Overleaf is the Jupyter Of LaTeX. Great for collaboration where git would be overkill (for the people involved).

It's a neat system, but for self hosting it requires a lot of ram the last time I checked.
