I do not like to say "LN is a layer 2 for Bitcoin".
For me LN is THE payment network of Bitcoin.
In fact LN was created not because of high fees, but because Bitcoin needed an instant settlement for payments.
Bitcoin cannot scale without LN and LN cannot exist / function without Bitcoin (onchain).
But yeah, in general this is a good article for beginners.
