Canada vs USA Basketball Showcase
The Canadian and American national men's basketball teams poised to compete for medals at the upcoming Paris summer Olympics played an exhibition match last night in Las Vegas.
Canada started hot holding a 7 point lead after the first quarter due to some solid defensive play and some obvious rust on the US side. Once the second units were in the game the US took over and never looked back. While Canada can boast a very solid starting 5 with SGA, Murray, Barrett, Brooks and Powell, they simply don't have the depth to compete with a US team that is filled with future hall of famers. Canada needed to shoot better from 3 to stay in this game and that simply didn't happen.
The US ended up winning 86-72.
Unless the entire US team gets food poising before the gold medal game or something along those lines I don't see any way they aren't winning gold.
Canada on the other hand has the talent to potentially compete for a medal but will face a treacherous path having to escape by far the most difficult group in the Olympics where they are pitted against Australia, Spain and Greece. So, their future is much less certain. I could see them making a run and potentially vying for a medal but also see them failing to get out of the group stage as they face strong national programs that have played together a lot longer than the few weeks the Canadian team will have under their belt as a unit.
Regardless of the outcome. I am looking forward to the Olympic basketball action and will be cheering on Team Canada.
Sats for all, GR
Any of USA, Germany or Spain will win the Gold. Spain is my favourite!
Canada is on a down spree recently. They have also seen a downfall in their rankings recently. But, this is sports and it's unpredictable so is entertaining!
reply
Nicargua will win the Gold in BB in Paris!!!
Predictions need not be true😆
reply
I wish Canada all the best luck! But US are now beast in BB.
reply
I will cheer for Spain!!
reply
This is one of their weaker teams.
Best teams were 1992 obviously but 1984 was great and 1960 was legendary
reply
If you're telling US are not so strong, kindly tell which one is?
reply
The gap between USA basketball and Europe is tiny compared to 1992.
The best players are Jokic and Luka?
Argentina won the gold medal in 2004 led by Manu Ginobli
France has a strong team this year and they will have home court advantage
reply
Definitely the gap has shrunk. I don't know if I would agree that it is now tiny. While other teams might feature MVP level players like Jokic, Doncic and SGA no other team can feature a roster made entirely of NBA all stars and future hall of famers.
reply
Tiny is an exaggeration
Point is other countries have upped their game
The emphasis on shooting especially 3 point shot has disproportionately benefitted Europeans and other foreigners
The gap was widest in 1992 Olympic games but everyone loved it. The Dream Team made basketball international.
reply
Agree gap has shrunk and continues to shrink compared to 30 years ago.
reply
Who's gonna win? Puerto Rico or South Sudan?
reply
Definitely a tough group! I will be supporting Spain!
reply
Four good teams. It will be fun to watch.
reply
This time , I think we are not as strong as in previous tournaments. We had to go through the pre Olympic tournament.

That was peak American exceptionalism. After that:
"It comes crashing down and it hurts inside"
reply
USA men will not win gold in basketball in Paris
reply
Now this is a bold call. Who do you think will win?
reply
France almost won gold in 2000
I predict France will win gold in Paris
reply
I will zap you 1k sats if that happens. Possible but I just don't see it. US team has too much depth.
reply
In the Olympics, do they defend man-to-man or is it zone defense? I ask that because I know it's a difference between the NBA and European basketball.
reply
Canada used both a different times last night so I guess it depends on the team.
