Would a sidechain for implementing the Cardano's extended UTXO model be a sensible idea?

This. People who want to use EVM contracts go and do it on chains with more liquidity. "It's built on bitcoin!" isn't enough of a reason for people to leave behind deeper liquidity and a larger ecosystem.
Altcoins are already obsolete.
Somehow, this reminds me of Dead space lore. Bitcoin as a brethren moon and altcoins as the markers.
First, everyone gets obsessed with altcoins; turning them into shitcoiners. But after some time, these altcoins get merged back into bitcoin.
