These kind of multi billion dollar science projects are fascinating to me. Even though the potential use is still decades away, or may even never come, it still feels like better use of public money than funding the military complex.
Pictures are mind bogging, in any event. Reminds me of what i saw when visiting the LHC during its construction phase and people could still go down to see the experiments. It felt like looking at underground cathedrals in terms of size and splendor...

The main thing that excites me about these projects is that they could eventually be done on the cheap. I imagine I'm looking at something like a 1960's computer. High cost, assuming no funny business, is usually a signal that we're super ignorant.

That's true. I do hope that as we learn more, we'll get to a point where things become cheap and efficient. Kinda like renewables... they once didn't make sense in terms of price compared to fossil fuels, now they are often the cheapest option available. How we got there (huge subsidies) is debatable, but the result again is that we have access to lots of cheap power now.

Science is way better than funding wars.
Imagine if we redirected 800Billiion/Year in spending from Military to Scientific advancement/research?

A few billion for ITER over many years suddenly sounds like peanuts compared to your number ;)

ITER's progress, captured in exclusive photographs, highlights humanity's push towards achieving sustainable fusion power, which could provide an abundant, safe, and environmentally friendly energy source for future generations. Awesome

Fiat funded project never to impressed, just waste of everyone energy and time !

What kind of projects impress you? Most projects are still funded with fiat...
Out of curiosity, how do you feel about SpaceX?
