I think that would apply whether a candidate releases delegates or not. A delegate always can vote against his or her candidate in good conscience.

Perhaps it's moot, but people had been emphasizing that DNC rules require delegates to vote for the person they're pledged to unless released to vote freely by the candidate. It seems like a reasonable person acting as a delegate could argue that they were released and it's not even a matter of "in good conscience", they just preferred someone else.
