Liberia has an interesting origin story

From perplexity: Liberia was founded in 1822 as a settlement for freed American slaves, organized by the American Colonization Society. The name "Liberia" means "land of freedom." The settlers established a colony that declared independence on July 26, 1847, becoming Africa's first republic. Joseph Jenkins Roberts, a freeborn Black American, became its first president. Despite its founding by freed slaves, the country has a complex history of social stratification, with Americo-Liberians dominating politics until a coup in 1980 led to civil wars that devastated the nation[2][3][4][5].
