I've been solidly stuck around the 1100-1200 level in rapid for a while, and I'm wondering if anyone has general tips that helped them get past this point. IE, doing chess able courses, puzzles, just playing games, etc.
What made the difference for you?
I'll mention that I've been trying to play very positional openings, such as the King's Indian Defense and the Pirc for black, and the King's Indian Attack and more recently the Glek for white. The videos I've seen for those just make sense, but apparently not enough sense for me to get my win rate up... So I'm not sure if I should just ditch and go to more tactical openings, or if I should stick it out in hopes that I learn positions better than my opponents in the long run.
I've noticed that I do pretty well when my opponent plays somewhat close to the main line, but I have a hard time dealing with early kingside attacks when I have a fianchetto'd bishop. In general, when there's a big deviation from the main line, by opponent SHOULD be doing worse, but I don't know how to punish it. I also have a bit of trouble with running out of time.
I play a few rapid games every week, and blitz (~600 elo) when I have a short window of time, and I'm always playing several correspondence games - and actually my rating for those is creeping up to 1500. I also try to do puzzle rush at least once or twice a day.
Overall, middle game is the most challenging for me, especially when it comes to time. I'm decent at recognizing simple-intermediate tactical patterns, and I'm getting a LITTLE better at recognizing when a tactic actually puts me in a worse position by the end of it, but that's hard to calculate a lot of the time.
