It's been a little more than a week since I switched to external wallets on Stacker News. So far, so good. Beyond a slight delay that is barely noticeable, the experience is more or less identical to that found using the SN wallet.
To recap, here's my setup:
  • I have the external wallets connected to my Graphene OS Pixel 7.
  • For zapping I use the NWC connect app from the Alby Hub to send to my own node. I have a channel opened to Stacker News.
  • For receiving, I use an Alby lightning address linked to my own node.
Here are my observations:
  • I primarily use my cell phone to access Stacker News, but sometimes I use my laptop for longer posts/newsletters. You need to set up distinct wallet connections to post/zap from each device.
  • There is sometimes a delay in payment when posting. Once or twice the post failed. It wasn't a big deal. I just tried again and it worked.
  • You can't dm with the wallet withdraw method.
  • On 8/30 I got this error while trying to zap a post:
Unexpected error value: [503, "AddInvoiceError", { err: [Error
This seemed to be an isolated event.

Conclusion

There really is no trade-off in performance. The benefits of self custody and decentralization far outweigh the slight inconvenience. You are protecting yourself while at the same time protecting Stacker News from possibly over zealous regulators.
Great recap Siggy.
@k00b will you be adding more wallets?

Yep, we'll be adding literally any wallet that we can do one or both of:
  1. request to pay an invoice
  2. request to an invoice to be paid
reply
That's great. I would like to use the same wallet for lightning login as for external connection.

Which wallet do you use for lightning login?

Breez

Breez doesn't currently give us a way to request it make invoices or pay invoices, but hopefully once they're using Breez SDK we can do this.
reply
Ok. I can use phoenix.

Phoenix doesn't really either, especially sending, but we should be able to let you receive to Phoenix via bolt12 eventually.

Good to hear you’ve had a smooth transition for the most part!
Unfortunately I ran into an issue with my setup — Alby Hub on StartOS. Haven’t figured out whether the issue is with LND or Bitcoin Core yet. I’m sure I’ll post about it if/when I find a solution. 🤞

nwc for send and receive is 🤌

My experience till now is only receiving through WoS and it’s working really well. I still need to set up the sending wallet, but will do.
Thanks for your feedback!

Thank you so much! It's good to see people writing no bullshit content here! TBH, it's my first platform where no garbage is to be seen. I think I need to learn a few more things before I make transition like you did. It's little tecky for me. Nonetheless, if it's done for better privacy, I'll do.

That's more like a mature Bitcoiner!! You seem to be setting in here.

It's great review! Thanks! I'm silently following you on this.

On 8/30 I got this error while trying to zap a post: Unexpected error value: [503, "AddInvoiceError", { err: [Error
I accidentally crashed our node on 8/30 preparing to make the node more resilient ironically.
reply
I had a feeling it was something like that.

Short and sweet! A great review! I'm still without it! I'm in a learning mode. I'll definitely use it but with the best option. I know many more such reviews will come and we all will find it easier and easier.
I only doubt that SN will then be open to only those who are technically sound. Won't that affect the adoption of SN?

Still need to setup a NWC connection to the SN PWA, but using it on desktop has been unexpectedly smooth. The small channel I have with SN comes in handy....
Hustle would have been content using the SN custodial wallet for small zaps and rewards, but the Albyhub UI/UX was too impressive. Now Hustle one tap zaps his nostr clients from his LND node on Start9......five clients and an extension with 10k sat monthly budgets....
Now Hustle wants some sort of non kyc bitcoin bill pay service with a NWC connection. He wants apps in the Albyhub app store that provide accounting and inheritance services like clams and nunchuk.
Downloaded the alby Dashboard as a PWA for mobile payments......the thing is smooth. Using zeus as well, but connectivity and reliability have always been an issue (Its working well nowadays).
I've been getting direct deposit 100 percent in bitcoin on cash app for over a year, Start9 and Albyhub with NWC and its budgeted app store have the potential to replace my cash app. If I need to pay for something in meat space.....I'll bring my wife.

I love your sense of irony at the end - possibly overzealous regulators. Haha

I'm having trouble anon-zapping you. I think your receiving wallet is not accepting the payment (ie returning the preimage in a timely fashion). Are you using Zeus for receiving by chance?
reply
No. I'm using an Alby lightning address. Interesting. When I first set up receiving a few months ago I did use my Zeus address for Stacker News when my wallet reached its limit, but I would not receive the sats until I opened the wallet. This was true even though I was using Zeus connected to my node. Maybe using the LSP it would work? I don't know.

That anon was me. Maybe I just wasn't patient enough.
reply
That's good to know. I wonder if others are experiencing an issue. I'm watching my received sats come in, and I check for failed transactions in the log, but I won't see them if the zap isn't initiated.
reply
I resent a 100 sat zap, SN displayed a graphic next to your post that said my zap was unsent.....I clicked it and it sent the zap again with no problem. First time seeing that one.
reply
Thanks for this information. We need to keep each other informed. I zapped you back just now and there was an unusual pause too. I wonder if it's related?
reply
That last zap was just as smooth as the custodial option.
Will let you know if any future zaps fail.

You can't dm with the wallet withdraw method.
We should be able to provide some "dm" analog for attached wallets at some point.
reply
Hi @siggy47, Just some doubts about attaching an external wallet to Stacker News.
I understand that SN will be asking to the users to take full control of their SATS, so every user should attach an external wallet to receive and send ZAPs to post.
Is there a deadline for this?
As you said on this post, the benefit of self custody is the goal and totally agreed with "forcing" users to responsibility of their funds.
Is there a post to see which wallets are compatible with SN?
Gracias!

Oh yes, there are many. It's proba ly best to start here: #723218

If open a channel to sn then your auto withdrawals always go through even if you have the desired balance set really low
