This one hurts. My favorite team won the World Series as I was just discovering baseball as a kid. Kranepool was never a star, but he was a fan favorite. He also had a knack for coming through in the clutch.

Good NY story. My cousin and I were reminiscing after we heard the news. My cousin was younger than me by a few years. When he joined pee wee Little League they issued him he jersey #7. He asked me what famous player wore the number 7 on his jersey. As a Mets fan, I naturally said "Eddie Kranepool." A few days later he was wearing his jersey with a bunch of friends. One of the parents exclaimed "#7! That's Mickey Mantle's number." He said " no it's not, it's Eddie Kranepool's. Years later, as a Little League coach at an awards dinner, he got to tell Kranepool that story.

Those are the best guys. The ones that aren’t stars but are gritty or get those big clutch hits and the fans love them for it.
