"Hence, politicians enact policies that many of them know don’t work just to stay in power." This is what is wrong with the system. It just a place for the wealthy to grab power. And if you arent wealthy to begin with, eventually you take enough bribes to become wealthy. And work hard to keep that power why giving the image that they are helping the people they represent.
It's why the idea of explicit constraints on government power was pretty smart. The problem is that it didn't fix the incentives, so politicians figured out how to gain power and wealth at the public's expense anyway.
The only worthwhile reforms would create incentives for politicians to act in the public benefit, but that's tricky.

IF the government held your wealth during the time you were in office, it would help. They would be able to track some of the suspicious bribes going to the politicians. It is hard to create an incentive to act in the public benefit. Maybe we should just rotate or put term limits on?

I don't think you can count on them to police themselves. It has to be in their interest to represent normal people's interests.
I have a bunch of half-baked ideas for this. One of the simple ones is to pay politicians whatever the average household income is of their constituents. That would give them a reason to make things better for normal people and stop enriching the oligarchs in NY and DC.

That is an interesting idea. But how many would want to be politicians if that was the price of their service?
reply
How many of these creeps do you want to be attracted to politics?
The original idea was not to have career politicians, but rather respected members of the community sort of taking turns acting as its representative.

Right, but you still need to attract the right people. If you get someone that is bad, it will be bad for the people they represent.

Maybe this could just be a bonus added onto their current salaries. It would be a trivial expense if it actually did anything.

That isnt a bad idea. It would be nice if a younger generation was able to get into the house and senate. But I guess age doesnt matter if there is a term limit.
