I love both with the bottom of my heart.
For what I grew up on more was definitely lord of the rings. I watch the trilogy every christmas with my sister quoting our favorite lines and anticipating the epic battle scenes, conversations, and memes.
It makes us feel like kids again. And we never get tired of it because it is literally fantasy storytelling perfection 🤧
Please discuss away in the comments!
It's LoTR for me and it's not even remotely close. It's an absolute masterpiece of literature and the adaptation may be the best film trilogy of all time.
The world building and messages are so much deeper.
That's not really meant as a dig at Star Wars either. Star Wars was just intended to be a big fun action adventure, but was so popular that they felt the need to staple some world building on top of it.

That's why I was saying: you cannot compare them. Both are fascinating worlds and you should see them differently, in their own way and story.
reply
They can't be compared but we may have a preference. Something tells me you would have only star wars if one had to go.
reply
It's a completely reasonable take. It's also an ironic one when you make it.
reply
currently watching the series "Rings of Power". Absolutely fascinating story!
reply
Are you caught up? My wife and I have been watching it. I think there are a lot of interesting things going on, but I find the writing distractingly bad.
reply
when I watch a series / movie I do not care too much about the writing and bad actors. My first focus is on the story. Yes, is really interesting to see what was going on before the original LOTR.
Like with Star Wars... many people are looking only to how bad Disney was putting it but they forget or ignore the whole original story. That's why many are considering Darth Vader a villain when in fact he's not, is just the balance into the force.

There is so much great art out there. It has to be a complete package for me. And I can't follow grand epic stories. Like star wars, I love it, but I only watch the OG 70s trilogy.
reply
I enjoyed Rogue One (which no one seems to like) and Andor (which everyone seems to like).
Rogue One is the immediate prequel to A New Hope and Andor is the prequel to Rogue One.
Are totally 2 different "worlds" and you cannot compare or put them together.

Same. She loves that shit. I take a nap. Can't do it.

I really like both but I will go with Lord of the Rings because I think Star Wars had too many duds.

Both universes are incredible. I feel Star Wars has the most potential but often the execution has been really poor. LOTR on the other hand, the execution by Peter Jackson was flawless resulting in my favourite movies.
reply
Its star wars for me
Probably just because I know more about it, and find the lore (that I know) fascinating.
I was always more of an anime guy.

Office space. I never learned to read.

I hate fantasy, so it’s Star Wars by default. But Star Trek is better than both.

I really feel they killed star wars with the recent stuff. Im surprised to see darth beig passionate about somethibg other than slamming shitcoiners. Lol

Star wars hands down. I tend to like sci-fi more than fantasy. Even though it's all fiction, I like forward looking and feeling. I get lost and sleepy with LOTR.

My wife and I are watching LoTR together right now - she's never seen the movies or read the books.
Tolkien's characters and relationships and worlds are amazing but his universe's rules feel too abstract and arbitrary for me. Why does an evil immaterial being give dark powers indirectly through rings? The powers of Gandalf and when he chooses to use them seem arbitrary too.
Star wars has less of this problem imo because its magic is grounded in microscopic beings so they tend to exhibit predictable rules and limits, e.g. Jedis need to be trained, grow exhausted, and they use their powers in small ways whenever they can.

I'm a big LOTR fan lol as long as we consider rings of power non-canon fan fiction!
Same with the last star wars trilogy, and all these new trash star wars series
If we include that, then I am a fan of neither

I know you're going to be surprised but I'm that 0.1% that hasn't seen Star Wars.

Disney has ruined the aura of Starwars

I think they both set the bar for fantasy epic and sci-fi epic, respectfully. Too many points to make and it’s late… However, I’ll expand the question to where things are today: new Star Wars movies post Disney acquisition or Rings of Power per Amazon…..

My tiny brain can't handle LOTR
