This is a really good point. Prevailing attitudes towards animals are no guarantee they'll be treated well.
The abuses in factory farms dwarf anything rural villagers could come up with, despite the fact that most Americans would describe themselves as "animal lovers".
i think a lot of people are quite ignorant of the horrors there and, in this case, ignorance is bliss i suppose.

Not at any appreciable scale. A random act of public animal abuse might be punished, but not the systematic abuse in factory farms.
