I don't know if some of you have heard about this before, but I just found out that something called "reading diagonally" is popular.
Basically his definition was this: Read the loose parts that give you an idea of what is happening. In a long paragraph, they are loose words; on a whole page, they are scattered lines that stand out a little.
It seems that it is also "popular" to read only the small paragraphs or just the dialogues... That explains how it is possible that there are people who read up to ten books a week. Well... """"""read"""""".
It is assumed that if you read it is because... Well, let's see how I can explain this coherently... BECAUSE YOU LIKE TO READ.
Also, I found out that people now watch movies and series in 1.5x or even 2x because they have no patience or concentration. Apparently it's a symptom of TikTok and social media being consumed in abundance and quickly, and people are losing their skills. We live in a time of rapid stimulation that fucks us up.
I'm surprised, but it's to be expected.
And eventually, that is how they declare, "I understand what bitcoin is!" Just literally from the same stimulation 🙄

Personally, I find it absurd and does not allow you to properly absorb the information you read.

Like anything else, skills improve with practice, it apply to reading to. There are various methodologies that help people not only read faster but also comprehend better what one assimilates. I don’t see as a lose of skills, instead an evolution, as we are overwhelmed by contents we need to assimilate and filter more and more every day, that why we can now talk faster, read faster and exchange information… faster!

We are so concerned with not wasting time that we have forgotten to live.

I don't think it is about wasting time, at least is not for me. It is like going to the gym, the more you practice, the more you are able to lift. Same for reading, or any other matter.

There is a method to this madness I once took a course called Evelyn Woods Reading Dynamics. In the course you train yourself to read MUCH more than one word at a time. You take in large chunks of material for each eye movement. You can also read in criss-cross across a page and take in the material. You have to learn to focus on where your fingers move across the page and maintain that focus for whatever you read. It is much like scanning when doing Vipassna meditation. You scan with your minds focus.

And how is it? Do you currently use that method?
reply
I learned several methods of glancing through texts even as a kid, that is natural for stuff that you don't respect, and especially where you're merely looking for things like confirming if it matches some big picture you're very well aware of.
All MSM text is a good, current example.
Then of course text that I really respect and want to understand are read at times where I can totally focus, reading every word from cover to cover, that has not changed since I was maybe ~13.
Watching videos at insane speeds? Now that is simply degen insanity, trying to get a number of stress induced, medical conditions haha!

Of course I understand your point, there are things that sometimes are not very necessary to read and let's say that it is acceptable to skip some lines, but reading absolutely everything under "diagonal" style, I don't know, it seems strange to me.
reply
Everything, yeah, definitely!
Might even have something to do with not getting the proper training for the eyeball muscles and reflexes, that is something that happens when you learn to read, and which should be way harder later on...
