Man thinks of a faster way to transport mined ore, so digs a tunnel through a mountain by hand. After 20 years of digging, a road gets built making his tunnel redundant. He continues to dig another 18 years to complete the tunnel. He then moved away.

Considering he lost all of his family before heading west, It sounds like he needed something to do to keep his mind busy as he worked through a lot of emotions. Seems no one really knows for sure, but its easy for me to imagine it was related.
