I guess this is all about point of view. The energy cost of making a baby is the cost of the satisfaction involved in the process! Just love that process! Raising a baby is quite a different story, there are lots and lots of energy and materials inputs that cannot be avoided. Perhaps this is why many prospective parents shy away from the baby raising task while they enthusiastically pursue the baby-making task.
