I'm still learning the ropes of the Lightning Network and I've been using Breez wallet for a while now and I'm happy with its 0-conf channel creation and relatively low fees (at least 2500 sats). However, I've noticed that many people in the community seem to prefer Zeus over Breez.
I've looked into Zeus and I see that it also offers 0-conf channel creation through its own designated LSP service, but with higher fees (at least 10,000 sats) than Breez's. I understand that this is due to the added benefit of better privacy through wrapped invoices.
But what else is Zeus offering that makes it a better choice than Breez? Is it the remote control feature for your Lightning node? Or is there something else I'm missing?
But what else is Zeus offering that makes it a better choice than Breez?
The simple answer here:
  • Zeus is offering multiple connection types to remote nodes (LND, CLN) and lndhub accounts. Breez don't. Zeus is offering an embedded LND node. Breez also. But with less features.
One important thing that differentiate them: In Zeus you can open easily any LN channels with any peer. In Breez is not that easy and hidden and you must know CLI commands. That means Breez is some kind of "walled garden". That's why sometimes lack of liquidity and you get force closed too.
Another aspect: You are forced to use a cloud account for the backups. In Zeus you can save on your own destination the LN node backup.
To see all these features are I wrote 2 detailed guides here:
In conclusion: Breez is not a bad LN node wallet. But lack of features. And Zeus is Zeus, it have them all features possible. Even a LN Address and a POS.
As I said many times: read all my guides before starting with Bitcoin and you will have a much easier journey.

speaking of embedded node, if I open a channel with a shady node and they try to cheat me with a past commitment tx, will Zeus auto-submit a justification tx? or at least give me the option to do so manually?
reply
auto-submit a justification tx
what do you mean by that? Zeus have nothing to do with your channels. You are the only one responsible for your own actions. This is self-custody. Read my guides, I explained there which are good peers for these kind of mobile nodes, not random bullshit peers.

thanks for your detailed explanation.

I use Zeus for my ln address provider; I think it's the best for that. But mainly I would use alby go now. Idk about the lsp perspective, I'm running my node at home.

I.like the interface of Zeus way better, and it does everything I need it to do. It also shows both my on chain and lightning balances with my alby wallet I imported. I also like the feature that allows me to go into a previous lightning outgoing transaction, select the reusable lnurl I sent to, and enter the amount of sats I want to send to the address. This is so helpful to me as I send to the same reusable lnurl all the time. Zeus also supports LNURLW and allows you to manually enter an amount you want to withdraw assuming the lnurl isn't a set amount.

I like and use both.

Personally I wanted to like Zeus before I was ready, but didn't really appreciate it until the "remote control for your lightning node" thing clicked.
For the more self custodial wallets using LSPs, Phoenix, and Breez are still in my rotation.

Honestly, I think the remote control feature on Zeus is a major reason why people are choosing it over Breez. I've been considering making the switch to Zeus once I get my own full node set up.

The best part of that is you are no longer relying on Zeus for anything other than the interface. It's all on your end that it functions. Zeus just becomes a window.
The bad part is that, if you're like me... How long will its functioning last? Lol
